For the past 7 weeks I have been learning the basics of programming. At my Junior College I have a class where I learn the common functions of C++. Stuff like if statments, switch statements, loops, integers, floats, and all that other good stuff.

Tomorrow I have my mid-term for the class. I have 3 hours to complete 100 questions on everything gone over on the course so far. Its an online exam and I can use any tools at my disposal to assist me on it, just so long as I don't get another student to help me.

In case you are interested, this here is the most complex piece of code I have ever done for the class:

Code:
// Assignment 4.4 Jared Tetrault
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
using namespace std;

int age;
int ageC1 = 0;
int ageC2 = 0;
int ageC3 = 0;
int ageC4 = 0;
int ageC5 = 0;
char gend;
int maleC = 0;
int femlC = 0;
int avgA;

int main()
{
    int count;
    int totalA;
    int yongA;
    int oldA;

    count = 0;
    totalA = 0;
    cout << "Enter age of attendee (-1 to quit): ";
    cin >> age;
    yongA = age;
    oldA = age;
    while (age > -1)
    {
          if(age<yongA)
          {
                       yongA = age;
                       }
          if(age>oldA)
          {
                       oldA = age;
                       }
          cout << "Enter gender (M or F): ";
          cin >> gend;
          if(gend == 'M' || gend == 'm')
          {
                    maleC++;
                    }
          if(gend == 'F' || gend == 'f')
          {
                    femlC++;
                    }
          totalA = totalA + age;
          if(age>=0 && age<=18)
          {
                    ageC1++;
                    }
          if(age>=19 && age<=30)
          {
                    ageC2++;
                    }
          if(age>=31 && age<=40)
          {
                    ageC3++;
                    }
          if(age>=41 && age<=60)
          {
                    ageC4++;
                    }
          if(age>60)
          {
                    ageC5++;
                    }
          count = count + 1;
          cout << "Enter age of attendee (-1 to quit): ";
          cin >> age;
    }
    cout << endl;
    if(count=1)
    {
               cout << "ERROR!" << endl;
               cout << "No data could be calculated" << endl;
               cout << "The following output is not legitimate" << endl << endl;
               }
    cout << "age 0  to 18: " << ageC1 << endl;
    cout << "age 19 to 30: " << ageC2 << endl;
    cout << "age 31 to 40: " << ageC3 << endl;
    cout << "age 41 to 60: " << ageC4 << endl;
    cout << "over 60: " << ageC5 << endl << endl;
    if(count>0)
    {
             avgA = totalA/count;
             }
    cout << "males: " << maleC << endl;
    cout << "females: " << femlC << endl;
    cout << "The average age was " << avgA << "." << endl;
    cout << "The youngest person in attendance was " << yongA << "." << endl;
    cout << "The oldest person in attendance was " << oldA << "." << endl;

    system("PAUSE");
    return 0;
}

Good luck, you shouldn't have any trouble. ;) My exam is end of semester and it's online as well. We have to figure out what's wrong with two very in depth program's code. Should be fun. >_>

Are you taking a C++ programming class as well?

I need help. :(

C++ wrote:
Write a program that reads a series of numbers (doubles) from the user, then prints the mean and the range.
Notes:
• You do not know ahead of time how many numbers will be in the list.
• When you want to stop entering numbers, enter control‐Z.
• The range is the difference between the lowest and the highest number.
• The numbers will be in the range of 0.0 to 100.0. Ignore any numbers outside of this range.

a) Average doesn't compute properly
b) Range is a mystery, no idea how to do min/max
c) I got a zero because I couldn't compile it properly

Anyone who knows C++ want to take a stab at it or perhaps stab it to death?
What am I doing wrong or not doing at all?

I have no idea about C++, so dohnt jump on me about this, but is "Num" a type of variable, or an actual variable?

If its a variable, then you cant use it in equations "cin >> num;"

If its a type, then the variables have not been given a type, and C++ Will have to assume int. This will be why it didnt compile.

For the range, you need a simple loop to find the minimum:

Code:
If Number(??? + 1) < Number(???) then Number(??? +1) = Minimum

else ??? +1

And then the same thing for maximum, just with the equality sign switched around.

Thanks for trying sweetie. ;) I didn't mean it won't compile at all, I meant it doesn't compile the way the instructor wants it to. Sorry about that! :oops:

And 'num' is a double(decimal user-input). :P

Code:
// Fan4Lost
// CMPSCI 101
// Section 001
// Lesson 29

// Write a program that allows the user to enter foods and their calories.
// Allow for UP TO 100 entries, although the actual number may be way less.
// When the user types "done" then stop asking for new entries. Prompt the
// user for a food item; when entered, search the list and display the item
// and the number of calories. If the item is not found, indicate that.
// Stop prompting for items to search for when the user enters "done".

#include <iostream>
#include <string>

using namespace std;

int main()
{
   string food[101];
   string product;
   int calories[101];
   int a = -1;

Enter the number of calories: 300
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): steak
Enter the number of calories: 500
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): done
Enter a product to look up: fish
fish has 300 calories.
Enter a product to look up: steak
steak has 500 calories.
Enter a product to look up: chicken
Enter a product to look up:

Should say:
Quote:
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): fish
Enter the number of calories: 300
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): steak
Enter the number of calories: 500
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): done
Enter a product to look up: fish
fish has 300 calories.
Enter a product to look up: steak
steak has 500 calories.
Enter a product to look up: chicken
chicken was not found.
Enter a product to look up:

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? :?

PS: You might want to move this to the Web Design/Graphics/Programming & PC Help section since I've turned it into a 'help needed' thread. :P Sorry about that! :oops:

Back to what it used to output:
Quote:
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): fish
Enter the number of calories: 300
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): steak
Enter the number of calories: 500
Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): done
Enter a product to look up: fish
fish has 300 calories.
fish was not found.

Enter a product to look up: steak
steak has 500 calories.
steak was not found.

Enter a product to look up: chicken
chicken was not found.
Enter a product to look up:

I hate this programming crap.

Ah, right.

Code:

            else if (product == food[i])
            {
                  cout << food[i] << " has " << calories[i] << " calories.\n";

                  break;

            }

Works!

Complete code:

Code:
#include <iostream>

   string product;
   int calories[101];
   int a = -1;

   {
      a++;
      cout << "Enter a menu item (enter 'done' when finished): ";
      getline(cin, food[a]);

      if (food[a] != "done")
      {
         cout << "Enter the number of calories: ";
         cin >> calories[a];
         cin.ignore();
      }
   } while (food[a] != "done");

Ah, right.

Code:

            else if (product == food[i])
            {
                  cout << food[i] << " has " << calories[i] << " calories.\n";

                  break;

            }

Please, please tell me why adding that extra break made it work? I thought using break would end the program completely. :? :cry: I'm so confused!

AND THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! *hugs*

No worries, you're welcome ^_^

The "break" instruction exits out of the current loop. (do-while, while, or for)
If there is a loop inside of a loop, the "break" instruction will break out of only the loop it's in..
So:

int x=0, y=3;
while(true)
{
y++;
if(y==999)
break;
while(true)
{
x++;
if(x==y)
break;
}
//takes you here
}
//takes you here

As for the code I changed, the if(i==a) part only happens if the for loop you have made it all the way through your list.
The for loop is set to only run while i<a and thus stops when i=a. The break I added there breaks out of the for loop when the items is found and therefor, i will not be a (i will actually be the index of your food item). :)

Make sense? I don't mind helping so please don't hesitate to ask questions. ^_^

You should be teaching the class I'm in, for real. Everything you just said made perfect sense to me. You are a lifesaver. I never knew that about breaks! I thought a break completely ended a program, not a loop. :oops:

Thank you again! You are awesome! :D

I will definitely have more questions as I start getting ready for my final. It's the week of the 15th and I got some of the assignments wrong but never got an explanation why.
