Falafelkid talks to GameSpy about Nintendo Wii's Online Multiplayer

Falafelkid: I would like to know if I am right in assuming that the features mentioned (friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data) suggest a single, unified online platform for each console, rather than one which is dependent on individual games (as is the case with the DS).

GameSpy: GameSpy’s technology does allow for features that could span multiple games. With the Nintendo Wii, however, the multiplayer features are title-specific.

Falafelkid: But is that the case for all Wii online titles across the board?

GameSpy: Yes, that is the case for Wii titles.

Falafelkid: Just one last question to make absolutely sure I have got this right, please. If I have a friend roster in one game, that roster will not be available to me in any other game. I have to build up an entirely new list for each title, right?

GameSpy: The answer to your question is yes, for the Wii friend lists are game specific.

Note the bold, friend lists not friend codes. Could this be a sign? Or is it GameSpy just being an ass and not being in more detail?

Windows Live to launch in May

But only for Vista-enabled PCs

Microsoft has announced that Games for Windows Live will launch in the UK on May 18 - with a spokesperson confirming to GamesIndustry.biz that the service will only work with Vista PCs.

Games for Windows Live will launch in North America on May 8 alongside the Vista version of Halo 2, with a UK release following ten days later. From June onwards, Windows gamers will be able to compete against Xbox Live players for the first time as cross-platform support for Shadowrun and Uno is introduced.

As with the Xbox 360 service, PC gamers will be offered two subscription options. Silver membership is free, and offers profile, voice chat, friends list, online status and progress comparison features, plus the opportunity to compete for single player achievements.

Gold membership costs GBP 39.99 / USD 49.95 per year, and gives users the additional option to invite friends into multiplayer games, unlock multiplayer achievements, search for gamers of an equivalent skill level and compete on either platform in supported games.

Both memberships include a multiplayer game browser so users can track down servers supported by Games for Windows Live titles.

As confirmed by Microsoft this morning, the service will only be available to PC owners using the new Vista operating system.

"Five years ago, we began building a service that now defines the bar for online gameplay," said interactive entertainment boss Peter Moore.

"We’re proud to be extending the best-in-class Xbox Live service to include Games for Windows Live, which will connect more than six million Xbox Live gamers together with the millions of online Windows gamers under a single online service."

Sony UK boss confirms PSP redesign

"Smaller, lighter" iteration on the way

SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire has confirmed the platform holder’s intentions to release a redesigned version of its PlayStation Portable handheld.

Speaking yesterday afternoon at the national launch of Sony’s PSP in Education initiative, Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists that the current PSP is just the "first iteration".

In line with the firm’s strategy for previous consoles, a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

Responding to a query on Sony’s plans for redesigning the system, Maguire added that any changes to the industrial design would not affect the size of PSP’s screen - widely seen as one of the system’s key strengths - which is "fixed". He did not offer any suggestions as to when the new iteration might be released.

A reworked PSP has been rumoured for months, but this is the first time a Sony executive has gone on record to confirm the company’s plans. Aside from a reduction in size and weight, Maguire did not suggest any additional changes to the hardware.

If the cost of components for the reworked PSP is less, the machine itself could also carry a lower price tag. It currently retails for GBP 179.

Cutting the size and cost of console hardware has been standard practice for Sony since it introduced PSone in 2000, five-and-a-half years after the Japanese launch of the original PlayStation. The slimline PStwo launched four years after PlayStation 2.

Following the PSP in Education event, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that while there are no "immediate changes" planned for the handheld other than new firmware updates, "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development, and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

Creator of 2D Ocarina of Time dies

The creator of the 2D fan remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time recently passed away in a fatal car accident. Dampe (as he was known on the forums) devoted himself to the OoT2D project for months, pausing only when he joined the military. Upon his return he resumed work and promised a demo would be released soon. With his death, the game, the official OoT2D webpage as well as the forums are closed forever.

Dampe's project was ambitious. He was so committed to creating a faithful reproduction it's rumored he was including glitches found in the original gold cart version of the game. A video from late last year shows the game in action.

Thanks for your dedication. Thousands of people you never even knew appreciate your hard work.

Just one more bit of proof that the game does exist.

Fans of RE4, happy? Or not?

More Bits of Info on Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

Seems that the game is being helmed by Masachika Kawata, who brought RE4 to PS2. As for some more interesting info, word is spreading that the game will be split into two parts. The main mode will be a new adventure taking place inbetween Code Veronica X and RE4, while the second mode will allow you to play as various RE characters in previous locations from other RE games.

Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed yet. Hopefully we will hear more from the Capcom Gamer’s Day.

Ocarina of Time 2D Creator May not be Dead

People were already calling him out then, and it seems that now things have gotten much worse. There is a bunch of evidence that shows that Dampe may not have died in a car accident, or died at all for that matter.

While nothing has been confirmed just yet, just the thought of someone faking their own death over this makes me sick. Read the facts to make up your own mind.

digg.com wrote:
“Yesterday, around 4:00pm, I received a phone call telling me that Richard (Dampe) has been in a fatal car accident…”

What a tragic accident. A 15-year-old Melbourne boy is struck and killed by a car that lost control on a wet road. Richard Denton, developer of Ocarina of Time 2D, is dead, and with him a highly anticipated game is no more.

Except I don’t believe that for a second. In fact, I think it’s bulls***. Here’s why.

Richard is supposed to have died on the 23rd of March. The announcement was here, but those forums have since been closed down, with not so much as a memorial message remaining. A final post from the forum is preserved on Digg.com:

Unfortunatley, On March 21st, We lost our great man, Richard (Dampe)
The official police record has read that Richard was hit by a car that had swurved on the wet road, the car WAS NOT speeding. Richard was knocked unconcious and shortly after passed away.

So, did Richard die on Wednesday the 21st, or on Friday the 23rd? News sites invariably quoted the 23rd, which was on the original message. Why was the first announcement off by two days?

Well, we could turn to local newspapers for some clarification. Diligent googling has so far failed to reveal any relevant articles. Never mind, not every single death gets reported. What about death notices? A search of news.com.au and Fairfax classified notices reports no deaths by the name of ‘Denton’. Well, if Richard isn’t going to get himself into the papers, we’ll just have to go to the government.

Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission has an excellent road toll statistics tool, searchable by date, location, victim and injury type. Let’s see what happens when we plug in a search for “pedestrian fatalities, 21-23 March”. Results: One fatality, an 18-20 y/o female killed on the 22nd between 2am and 4am. That… doesn’t sound much like Richard at all.

For a ten-point explanation of why faked his death, let’s pass the microphone to Nihiljin in the Kotaku comments:

1. No rain in his area for several days, ruling out death by a car that swerved off the road to hit him. [NB there was 1mm of rain on Wednesday 21 March]
2. No local news in his area mentions the death of a teenager named Richard Denton.
3. No info at local police stations about an accident.
4. There were several Ocarina of Time 2D projects. His was being done in Gamemaker and it was the least impressive.
5. Months and months of work and we get a few screenshots of the Deku Tree.
6. Only 15 years old. I’m the same age and I frequently move from different stuff, getting bored quickly with the same things. He could’ve gotten tired of it.
7. Pressure. People would expect great things from anything with the words “Ocarina of Time” in the title. He might have cracked.
8. “Mention OoT2D on the forum and you’re banned. Forget about it. His family doesn’t want you to talk about it.” ^Short version of what was posted on the site. Why would mentioning it be bad? Why would his family care so much about a project they probably didn’t know or care about? Why would they be so desperate to eliminate all traces of it if they were grieving so much? If I died I think my family would have other matters besides shutting down my accounts on the Sony and Nintendo forums.
9. His account was acessed a few hours after his “death”.
10. A bit too perfect. The brilliant young developer is tragically killed and his last words were “I love you” to his girlfriend.

In addition to point #9, Dampé’s YouTube profile shows that ’someone’ was logged into his account as recently as March 28th.

Ask yourself what happens more frequently: a 15-year-old boy is run down by an out-of-control car, generating no press coverage, or a 15-year-old boy gets bored with a project and gives up on it. On the facts available, I can’t accept that Dampé is dead.

This is abhorrent - the gaming community has mourned his death, and this news has upset many people who knew Dampé through the project. The record needs to be set straight. Prove me wrong, if you can.

Digg this

Update: Solitary Angel posts on Gaming World Forums:

The thing that kind of makes this topic worse is that Dampe’ is very much alive…
By signing on with an older MSN account (not just me), a few people found out that he was in fact still online…

His reasons for wanting people to think he is dead was so that they would stop adding him and asking about OoT2D, and to also kill his reputation, stopping whatever pressures he may or may not have been under to complete his game…

Nonetheless a lot of us are pissed off and I just thought I’d say this before more RIP posts pop up.

Next Level Games Drops Information on Strikers Charged Online Modes

- N-Zone got to play a few online matches with testers in Seattle that are working on ironing out any online kinks.

- There will be three types of matches: friendship, “regular”, and area specific matches. Area specific matches relate to the areas of the world, not the areas in the game. There will be a sort of “soccer season” sort of game, in which you earn points for matches you win. You have the chance to win achievements on this board, and your Mii will be shown through these boards to other online players.

- N-Zone asks if worldwide tournaments would be possible, to which Mr. Inglehart replies “That would be on Nintendo to do so. But technically it would be no problem.”

RE4 Wii Edition Details, still Not Confirmed by Capcom

Now a Japanese chain store came up with the first information regarding the game. According to this store the game will be fully customized for the Wii-mote and Nunchuk, and new levels will be added specially for the new control sytem. The Wii-version will be based upon the GameCube version with the Ada Wong missions from the Playstation 2 added to it. The graphics will also be improved, meaning that there will be more simultanious action possible on screen. The Wii-version will also have a new mode, the Gallery Mode and a new difficulty level. Capcom still hasn't confirmed anything yet. (Even if the game is really in development)

New Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles Information and Residentl Evil 4 Wii Edition Confirmed

It seems that Umbrella Chronicles will have first person gun shooting. It is unclear how much more of the game will utilize a first person view. Returning characters will be Chris, Jill, Rebecca, Billy Cohen, Wesker, and more. It seems that the storyline will show the downfall of the Umbrella Corp.

Also confirmed is Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition. The game will take what the PS2 version had as extras and add upon it, as well as offering up Wiimote controls for knife fights. Unfortunately that is all the info we have learned at this time.

More Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition Information as well as More Residentl Evil: Umbrella Chronicles information

The RE4 Wii Edition Info: As we mentioned earlier last night, the Wii version of the game will included the “Another Order”/”Separate Ways” bonus mission that was in the PS2 version. The Wiimote will be used for aiming, reloading (hold B and shake), and the knife (don’t hold B and shake). The game will also include a brand new trailer of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

RE:UC Info: Well, it seems that the entire game is on rails. You can look around with the analog stick, and change your path at certain times. There will be no free movement.

Statement from Shinji Mikami: Also, Shinji Mikami apologized for porting RE4 to the Playstation 2. He says it betrayed both Cube and PS2 owners, and he deeply regrets it.

New RE: UC information

- The game will be fully polygonal, no pre-rendered backgrounds
- there will be quick-time events, better known as context sensitive events much like the ones in RE4. Camera will zoom out to show the character performing these actions.
- A question posed to the game’s producer…

Q: don’t you think to have betrayed the series making a shooter?
A: there is a part of hard core gamers that don’t like it for sure, but a lot of more gamere were tired of the same formula and we are doing something new to please all the people that have found the previous RE quite repetitive.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Wii and DS

The latest Nintendo Power supposedly has a small article on an extension of Bizarre Creations Xbox Live Arcade title Geometry Wars that is coming to the Wii and DS. It is said the developer behind Battalion Wars will be handling the game, which most likely means Kuju Entertainment. Obviously, the Wii version will have motion control, and the DS version will have be controlled via the stylus. The games will include a multiplayer and singpleplayer mode, and include the retro and evolved selections from the 360 version.

KEY INFORMATION
If you think you knew what it felt like to be the bounty hunter behind the visor, think again. Take aim at evil with Nintendo’s revolutionary controller.

* Players control Samus by moving with the Nunchuk controller and aiming with the pointer, allowing for a level of immersion unlike anything they have ever experienced. Through the eyes of Samus, players experience a quantum leap in first-person control as they wield the Wii Remote controller, the ultimate device for the first-person shooter genre.

* Samus will employ well-known power-ups like the Grapple Beam and Morph Ball, as well as a bunch of new surprises, to help her survive her coming trials.

Game storyline: Six months have passed since the events on the planet Aether. The Galactic Federation’s network computer, Aurora Unit, is suddenly and completely corrupted with something like a virus. The Federation believes Space Pirates may be behind the problem and, beginning with Samus, starts to contact bounty hunters. As they explain the situation to the assembled hunters, the Federation is attacked by the pirates. Samus and the other hunters leap to the defense of the Federation capital, only to find that the enemy the hunters face is the presumed-dead Dark Samus. Dark Samus is armed with immense power that no one can withstand. It soon becomes obvious that the forces controlling Dark Samus and the terror of the contaminated Phazon are a dire threat that could corrupt the entire universe.

Characters: Samus, Dark Samus, the Galactic Federation and new bounty hunters.

How to progress through the game: The war initiated by Dark Samus and the Space Pirates rages across many planets as they attempt to corrupt each with Phazon seeds. Players use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk™ controllers to explore alien landscapes, hunt for weapons and information, and destroy the seeds. Saving the planets from corruption isn’t enough, though. Eventually, players must take down Samus’ mortal enemy, Dark Samus.

Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, players will be able to grasp and pull things by using actual arm movements, as well as execute amazing feats like aiming and blasting in midair or at a full run. The game also incorporates a new system involving Phazon. If you fill Samus’ Phazon supply to a certain level, Samus will temporarily go into hyper mode, a state in which she can pull off incredible feats; on the flip side, if she exceeds the maximum Phazon level, she’ll perish. Also, for the first time in the Metroid series, Samus’ ship will be used in active game play.
